What is Fructose?

Fructose is a natural sugar that is often found in items such as fruits, honey, and some vegetables. However, it’s also found in high-fructose corn syrup, an artificial sweetener used in sweets, candy, and other foods. The more we understand about fructose and how it impacts the body, the smarter our food choices can be.


Benefits of Fructose

In its natural form, fructose can be good for your health and body. It’s actually much sweeter than regular sugar and therefore less of it is needed to sweeten foods. Natural sugars provide the body with increased energy and are easily processed. However, this is only true if a person is following a healthy diet and not consuming fructose from a man-made source, such as high-fructose corn syrup.


Risks of Fructose

Consuming too much fructose or a lot of high-fructose corn syrup can be linked to a variety of health concerns, including:

  • Weight gain. Too much sugar can lead to an increase in stored fat. Excessive weight gain can lead to a variety of health concerns.

  • Insulin resistance. Blood sugar levels are impacted by fructose. If you consume too much, your body may lose its ability to process sugar, which leads to insulin resistance and ultimately, diabetes.

  • Obesity. Excessive stored fat can lead to obesity. Obesity is the primary cause of many serious health issues and impacts your quality of life.

  • Heart disease. Diet is a leading cause of heart disease, so it's better to learn how to control your eating patterns before you’re at risk.


It’s important to note that studies about the influence of fructose on the body may be difficult to decipher, partly because foods that contain fructose also usually contain other sugars and ingredients that may be contributing to health problems. So always follow the general rule offered by medical professionals: limit your consumption of all sugars, including fructose.


Fructose is naturally occurring, but this does not automatically mean it’s good for you. While the fructose found in fruits and vegetables can actually help the body thrive, fructose found in high-fructose corn syrup may have an adverse effect. In order to ensure that you aren’t consuming too much sugar, it’s important to adhere to a balanced diet.
