The father of modern medicine, Hippocrates said: ‘Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food’ Have you ever thought about that statement and what he meant? Those really are powerful words if people would choose to look at their meaning and realize that what they put into their bodies has a tremendous impact on their health and wellness. Getting people to take a good inventory of how certain foods makes them feel alive, or lethargic is much more difficult that it sounds.
I actually just read a story of a mother who had traveled to see Gandhi and asked if he would tell her son to stop eating sugar. “Please bring your son back in two weeks and I will speak to him.” Two weeks later, the woman returned with her son. Gandhi said to the boy, “Stop eating sugar.” The woman then asked Gandhi why she and her son had to wait two weeks for that message. “Because two weeks ago, I was eating sugar,” Gandhi replied.
Basically my point is that if you are wanting to influence your family or friends to be healthier and do better, don’t just tell them, show them. Be an example. If you want to make this year you healthiest year yet, make a conscious decision to know what you are putting in your body. Eat more fruits and vegetables, beans and whole grains. Switch to using almond flour and coconut flour in some of your recipes for a healthy, lower carb alternative. You don’t have to give up great tasting food to eat healthy either. If you are the main cook in the house, try a few healthier alternatives of your family’s favorite meals and see if they can even tell the difference.
Maybe you are one of the savvy people who keep up to date with the latest diet craze and know all the latest and greatest health topics. I have noticed that more people are taking a stand about where there food comes from and what is in it. GMO and kosher are recognized terms. Gluten free is in every grocery store. More and more people are paying attention to what they are eating now than ever before, but it seems to me that more people are obese and more people are sick and tired and have serious health problems, than ever before as well. Now, I am not saying that food alone is going to suddenly alter the state of our health. I am saying that we need to be paying attention to what we eat, what we drink and be sensitive to air quality around us.
One thing that I think is so important to recognize about Honeyville’s products is that they don’t have all the additives and chemicals to make the foods last. The dehydrating and freeze drying process is all that is needed. There are no added salts, MSG, or anything of that nature that make you have to question whether or not what you are eating or giving to your children is safe. One of my favorite quotes from the natural health world says, “The doctor of the future will no longer treat the human frame with drugs, but rather will cure and prevent disease with nutrition” – Thomas Edison. Benjamin Franklin adds, “The best doctors give the least medicine.”
Some of us take better care of our cars or household appliances than we do our own bodies. We make excuses that it cost so much more to eat healthier. I don’t know, but I think if we really did the math we would see that really isn’t the case. And in the long run, how much is your health worth to you?
