I love surprises, don’t you? They’re so exciting. Whether it’s a twist ending in a classic movie or book, a special get-together or party you didn’t know about, or even just a fun joke or trick played on you from a friend or loved one, surprises are just, well, surprising!

With the Halloween season upon us we are officially in the “surprise” time of year. Scary and fun surprises are popping up all around the neighborhoods! What better time to introduce you to a surprise of our own, our delicious Halloween Spooky Surprise Cake! Sure, on the outside it may look like your typical, two-layered, chocolate frosted cake. But one slice into this seemingly innocent cake and you’re in for the surprise of your life–a purple, orange, and green surprise that is sure to excite all your little ghouls and goblins! And get ready, this surprise not only affects your eyes, but your taste buds as well! Warm up that witches cauldron and lets get baking!

Ingredients (Purple Cake):
3 cups Honeyville Yellow White Cake Mix
2 Large Eggs
1/3 cup Water
1/2 Tbsp Purple Food Coloring

(Green Cake):
3 cups Honeyville Yellow White Cake Mix
2 Large Eggs
1/3 cup Water
1/2 Tbsp Green Food Coloring

(Orange Buttercream Frosting):
4 cups Powdered Sugar
1/2 cup (stick) Butter, Softened
1/2 cup Heavy Cream
1/4 tsp Vanilla
1 tsp Orange Food Coloring

(Chocolate Frosting):
1/2 cup (stick) Butter, Softened
2/3 cup Honeyville Baker’s Cocoa Powder
3 cups Powdered Sugar
1/3 cup Milk
1 tsp Vanilla

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a large bowl, mix together all the ingredients for purple cake until a thick batter forms.

Repeat the process for the green cake.

Pour each batter in it’s own separate, greased circle cake pan and bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out cleanly. If you have a convection oven, you can bake both cakes at the same time, as we did.

Once cakes are done baking, remove and let cool in the cake pans for 10 minutes, remove, and let cool on a wire rack for an additional 1 hour.

While cakes are cooling, begin your orange buttercream frosting. To do so, combine powdered sugar, butter, heavy cream, vanilla, and food coloring in a mixing bowl and mix together with an electric hand mixer until light, fluffy peaks begin to form.

Place the green cake on a cake stand and frost the top of the green cake with your orange frosting. Be generous with the amount, as this will be the middle filling of your cake.

Once frosting is complete, take your purple cake and place it, top down, on top of the frosted green cake.

In a medium mixing bowl, combined butter, cocoa powder, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla and mix with a hand mixer until light and fluffy.

Begin to frost the outside of the cake by frosting the sides first, then the top of the cake.

Make sure you get an even amount of frosting on the entire cake.

Sprinkle the top with your favorite Halloween sprinkles. Slice, and serve!

This is an awesome cake to bake up and to eat! The neon colors that will show through on each sliced piece is exactly what you need for any Halloween celebration or party. Bake it up for your spooky get-togethers and watch the shock and surprise come on everyone’s face as you cut the first slice. And don’t worry, the taste that comes through from the sweet buttercream frosting and dark chocolate topping will leave everyone asking for seconds!

Surprises are so much fun, and thanks to this cake, delicious too!
