Food storage isn’t just about gathering and storing. It’s also about eating and enjoying! With summer upon us, what better way to rotate in our food storage items than a camping trip? Think about it, most of your food storage items are dried, dehydrated, crystallized, or powdered. They don’t need refrigeration, and they’re pretty easy to pack in, packaged in their own protective container. Your food storage was made for camping! Now, you just need the perfect recipe to use your food storage in.

Look no further, we have just the recipe for you. Even better, every item we used in this recipe came right from your food storage pantry. And, to top it all off, we baked it in a dutch oven. It’s the perfect camping meal! So, enough talking, let’s get started! I give you Mountain Man Breakfast!

2 1/4 cups Honeyville All Purpose Biscuit and Pancake Mix
2/3 cups Milk
2 cups Honeyville Dehydrated Hash Brown Potatoes
3 cups Honeyville Freeze Dried Sausage
2 cups Honeyville Ova Easy Egg Crystals (Or 8 fresh eggs)
2 cups Honeyville Freeze Dried Cheddar Cheese

Before starting your meal, make sure that your dutch oven is ready to go.

For this meal, I used a 4 quart Lodge Dutch Oven, and lined it with foil. I know there are some that are against the foil, as it keeps the flavor of the oven out of the food, but for me, it really makes clean up a lot easier.

Begin by re-hydrating your Hash Browns, Sausage, and Cheddar Cheese.

While those items are re-hydrating, reconstitute your Ova Easy Egg Crystals by combining 2 cups of crystals and 4 cups of water in a mixing bowl, then whisking ingredients together.

Once the eggs are reconstituted in a bowl, set aside and begin your biscuit top. Combine All Purpose Biscuit Mix and Milk in a mixing bowl and mix until dough is soft. On a floured surface, roll dough out to 1/2 inch thick.

Drain your Hash Browns and line the bottom of your dutch oven with them.

Next, add your layer of Sausage.

After Sausage, pour the Eggs over the mix.

Sprinkle the Cheese over the top.

Once all the ingredients have been added, take the rolled out biscuit dough, lay on top of the mix, and cut off the edges that don’t fit in the mixture.

Now that the meal is complete, let’s get cooking! For this recipe, you’ll want to keep your oven at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes. This means you’ll need a total of 21 coals.

Spread 14 coals on the lid of the dutch oven and 7 coals underneath. Since this recipe will take around 30 minutes to cook, you’ll want to rotate the lid once and the whole dutch oven once. Charcoal tends to have hot spots, so rotating your lid and oven allows for an even cook.

Check oven regularly, as you don’t want to burn the top. use a toothpick or knife to check to make sure the inside is evenly cooked.

Once meal is completely cooked, cut it like a pie, and serve.

When it comes to flavor, this breakfast meal can’t be beat. The three cups of sausage packs plenty of seasoning in the meal, and the biscuit top gives it a light, fluffy texture. And the smell? Let’s just say that this will pull any hibernating camper out of their tent and around the campfire, ready for chow!
