I love my job. Why, you ask? Well, aside from all the amazing food that I get to bake, cook, taste, and enjoy, I also get the opportunity to test out new products before they are officially released on our website. Spoiled? Yes. Loving every minute of it? Heck yes!!!

This past week I had the opportunity to have some fun with the all new Fagor 3 in 1 Electric Multi-Cooker. This cooker takes function to a whole new level. With the ability to slow cook, pressure cook, and steam cook, you might just call this the “Swiss Army Knife” of electric cookers. Think about it, you’ve got three cooking appliances all in one. Not only is that convenient, but think of all the shelf space you’ll save in your kitchen. That means more room for food!

In additional to functionality and multiple uses, this cooker is simple to use. I mostly messed around with the slow cooking function and was amazed, not only at how easy it was to use, but how more user-friendly it was than my personal crock pot. With a digital keypad that allows you to enter in half hour segments (up to 9 1/2 hours of slow cooking) dialing in my cook time had never been easier. As you can see below, we cooked up some delicious Apple Cinnamon Steel Cut Oats. For any of you that have tried to cook steel cut oats, you already know that the easiest way to cook them is in a slow cooker over night. But what happens if you put your steel cut oats in the slow cooker at 9 p.m. with the intent of taking them out at 7 a.m., but you accidentally sleep in an additional hour? Burnt oats, that’s what.

With the Fagor slow cooker, once your food has reached the cook time you entered, the cooker will sound two beeps, then switch from the “slow cooking” setting to the “warming” setting, and will stay there until you turn off the machine. This means no burning and no cold food either. Can the average crock pot do the same?

Apple Cinnamon Steel Cut Oatmeal

2 cups Honeyville Freeze Dried Apples
1 cup Honeyville Steel Cut Oats
1 1/2 cups Milk
1 1/2 cups Water
2 Tbsp Brown Sugar
1/2 tsp Cinnamon
1/4 tsp Salt

Rehydrate 2 cups of Apples as described on the packaging.

For recipes like this one, I like to use the smaller cans of Freeze Dried Fruit. One small can of Apples should be just enough for this recipe.

BRIEF NOTE: Steel Cut Oats are the healthiest Oats you can find. Because the only processing involved is cutting the oats, the oat still contains the groat and outer shell, including all the nutrients that are usually lost after the shelling and rolling process most rolled oats experience.

Remove the inner mixing pot from the Fagor cooker.

Add steel cut oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt to the mixing pot.

Don’t worry if one cup of steel cut oats doesn’t seem like enough. These oats will puff up quite a bit as they cook.

Pour in water and milk.

Add apples, stir once with a big spoon, and place pot back in Fagor cooker.

Place lid on cooker and lock lid in place. To start the cooking process, push the low button on the slow cooking part of the keypad on the cooker. Every push will go up “0.5” on the digital screen, or one half hour. Cook on low for 7 hours.

Once cook time is done, remove the lid. You’ll notice that the apples will be resting on top. With a large spoon, mix ingredients back up, scoop up and serve.

This recipe should make 3-4 bowls worth of oatmeal. Garnish with freeze dried fruit and season with additional brown sugar to taste. Now that you’ve seen the Fagor in action, what are some meals you’d like to see cooked with it?
