Fall has always been a time of Harvest! That wonderful time of the year when all the hard work and patience of the summer comes to a completion with a delicious crop of fresh fruit and vegetables. And the most well known fruit associated with the harvest would most definitely have to be the apple.

I can still remember as a boy my family heading up to the local fruit and vegetable stands in Utah to pick up some of the delicious, fresh apples. I can remember being in awe of all the different colors, tastes, and yes, even aroma’s that each apple contained, then bringing them home to bake delicious treats and pies. There is just something special about apples this time of year, and that’s probably what led me to today’s recipe. It combines all the deliciousness of our famous Freeze Dried Apples, with the amazing aroma of baked bread and the sweet taste of cinnamon and sugar. And it’s super quick to bake. Just over an hour to prepare, bake, and eat. With fall upon us, it really is only fitting that we bake up some delicious Dutch Apple Bread!

Ingredients:
2 cups Honeyville Freeze Dried Apples
2 1/2 Tbsp Honeyville Powdered Buttermilk + 1 cup Water
2 cups Honeyville All Purpose Flour
4 Tbsp Honeyville Powdered Whole Eggs + 8 Tbsp Water (2 eggs)
1 cup Sugar
1/2 cup Butter, Softened
1 1/2 tsp Baking Powder
1/2 tsp Salt
1/4 tsp Baking Soda
1/2 cup Chopped Pecans
1 tsp Vanilla

Topping:
1/4 cup Honeyville All Purpose Flour
1/4 cups Sugar
2 tsp Ground Cinnamon
1/4 cup Butter, cubed

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a large bowl, combine butter, sugar, and eggs. Add just 1/4 cup buttermilk and vanilla, and mix together until you have a creamy mixture.

Combine flour, baking powder, salt, and baking soda to mixture and mix together until a soft batter forms.

Re-hydrate your apples by soaking in water, then draining the excess water.

Fold in apples and pecans into batter.

Pour batter into a greased, 9×5 bread pan.

Now, begin making your topping. In a medium mixing bowl, combine sugar, flour, and cinnamon, and mix together.

Cube in butter, and mix together until you get a coarse, crumbly texture.

I mixed mine a bit too long and ended up with sticky, large, flat crumbs, but don’t worry, those work too. Sprinkle on top of bread, then place in the oven. Bake at 350 degrees for 55-60 minutes, or until you can cleanly remove a toothpick.

Remove from oven and allow to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then remove from pan and let cool on a wire rack. Slice up and serve.

The aroma that comes from this bread is exactly what you want in a baked apple treat. Sweet cinnamon, baked apple, and fresh bread will fill your kitchen and home with the sweet smells of fall. The cinnamon, sugar topping gives this bread a delicious crunch, while leaving the inside of the bread moist and delicious. Top a slice with melted butter for a taste that will warm your soul and leave you craving more. This is definitely a treat you’ll want to make more than once this year!

Oh how I love harvest time! What’s your favorite apple treat to bake this time of year?
