I love trying new things, don’t you? There’s something exciting about discovering a new recipe or new baking technique, then successfully repeating it in your own kitchen. Finding more and more ways to bake delicious, beautiful food is really what baking is all about.
It’s that love of baking discovery that led me to today’s recipe. Challah bread, in and of itself, is already a delicious, gorgeous looking loaf that combines the skills of bread baking with the technique of braiding and weaving. With that amazing look and even better taste, it’s no wonder so many bakers find joy and excitement when creating such a masterpiece. But what if you could put a twist on this traditional Jewish loaf? What if, with the addition of a few ingredients, and the switch from loaf to buns, you could create a sensational, satisfying side that not only tastes amazing, but looks it as well? Believe it or not, you can, and it’s much easier than you think! Grab your Bosch Mixer, it’s time to create some Chocolate Chip Challah Buns!
Yields: 12 large buns
First, combine all ingredients in your BOSCH Universal Mixer in the following order: water, butter, eggs, honey, chocolate chips, salt, 4 cups flour, and yeast. Turn mixer to #2 setting and, while mixing, add remaining flour until dough begins to pull away from the sides of the bowl. Knead in machine for 4-5 minutes (if you use the BOSCH Dough Hook Extender, Kneading time is only 2-3 minutes).
Remove dough and place in a greased bowl. Cover, and let rise for 1 hour, or until double in size. Once risen, punch down and remove.
Divide dough into 12 sections.
Take each section and divide it into 4 pieces.
Roll each piece out to about 1-2 inches in length, then weave the 4 pieces together, like shown above.
Tuck the tails of each piece in under the dough, and you have a challah bun.
Place finished buns on your USA Pan Cookie Sheet covered with parchment paper. Cover the buns with plastic wrap and let sit for 30 minutes.
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
Once rolls have sat, remove plastic wrap and brush the tops with an egg wash. Sprinkle course salt and sugar on tops.
Place in 400 degree oven, knock temperature down to 350 degrees, then bake for 30 minutes. Remove, transfer to a wire rack, and let cool for 15 minutes before serving.
These buns bake up perfectly and taste absolutely amazing. Not only do they look breathtaking, the combination of sweet and savory give these taste treats the right amount of flavor to make your mouth completely melt!
Yes, baking is all about trying new things, and nothing is more exciting to try than this amazing recipe.
