Howdy Y’all! Sorry, something about today’s recipe just has me typing with a Southern drawl! In my many travels I had the opportunity to spend a few years in the great state of Texas. It was during my time there that I developed a true love of the Southern Cuisine, or as they call it there, “Down-Home Cookin’!” The thing that makes Southern meals so great is that they are all about comfort! No calorie-counting here, just plenty of deep fried, gravy loaded goodness!
It’s that Southern mentality that led me to ask myself a question: “Could you fry Freeze Dried Chicken?” Well, after an amazing (and delicious) 3 hours in the kitchen, I’m happy to say that you not only can fry our Freeze Dried Chicken, but that it tastes simply amazing doing so! 2 1/4 cups Honeyville Original Biscuit & Pancake Mix
2/3 cup Milk
Let me start off by saying that the Honeyville Original Biscuit & Pancake Mix, which we used in this recipe, is simply awesome! This mix bakes up the easiest biscuits I’ve made. And the taste can’t be beat. Okay, enough about the mix, let’s get to the meal!
Preheat Oven to 450 degrees.
Add Mix and Milk, and stir until dough is soft. On a floured top, roll out dough until it is about 1/2 inch thick.
With a Mason Jar lid, cut out biscuit shapes and place on a greased cookie sheet. This recipe should give you 8-10 biscuits. Bake at 450 degrees for 10 minutes, or until biscuits are golden brown.
While biscuits are baking, you can start to fry up your Chicken. Take 1 cup of Freeze Dried Chicken, and re-hydrate it by soaking it in a bowl with water. Once chicken is soft and tender, drain water from the bowl.
In one bowl, add 1 egg, whisked, and in a separate bowl, combine flour and seasoning.
Dip chicken in egg bowl, making sure the chicken gets completely coated with egg.
After chicken is coated with the egg, drop the chicken into the flour/seasoning mix and shake bowl and chicken, to make sure chicken pieces are fully covered. Use a sifter to sift out the chicken pieces.
On a skillet, heat olive oil at medium heat and drop chicken into the oil. Make sure the oil is completely heated before you drop your chicken in. With a spoon, gently turn the chicken after 3-4 minutes, making sure each side gets enough fry time in the oil.
You’ll want the chicken to have a golden brown texture.
Once chicken is complete, remove and let soak on a paper towel, then begin your gravy.
In a sauce pan over medium heat, combine 2 1/2 cups milk and 1/4 cup flour, gently stirring in. Add 1 cup of freeze dried sausage, and continue stirring. Don’t worry about re-hydrating the sausage, it will re-hydrate in the gravy and give it a really great, peppery taste! Continue stirring until gravy comes to a boil, then reduce heat to a low simmer, and let simmer for 2 minutes, stirring constantly.
On a separate plate, place three biscuits, then scoop the fried chicken on top.
Gently pour the gravy on top, ring that dinner bell, and by golly, you’ve got a plate of delicious Chicken, Biscuits & Gravy!
You will not believe the flavor packed in this meal! First, you’ve got that smoky, peppery taste from the sausage and gravy, the soft, buttermilk taste of the biscuits, and the delicious, Chicken-fried taste that comes through right in the middle. You’ve never tasted Food Storage Chicken this good! A plate of this each morning and you’d swear you just woke up across the Mason Dixon line!
