Braided Dinner Rolls

It just isn’t a meal without fresh baked dinner rolls, don’t you agree? That sweet, buttery taste! The light, fluffy texture. Rolls are more than a simple side dish. They’re the glue that holds our meal time together!

I can still remember the warm, delicious, and large, rolls my mom would always make for Sunday dinner. These bad boys were hug! To tell you the truth, I think they were actually two rolls baked into one, but you’d never hear a complaint from us! No matter what the main dish, recipe, or even time of year, we always new that her steamy, fluffy, butter drizzled rolls would be waiting for us each Sunday afternoon!

While I know that I’d never be able to duplicate my mom’s famous creations, it were her rolls that led me to today’s recipe. I wanted to create a stand-by, tried-and-true dinner roll recipe that was delicious, easy-to-bake, and extremely unique. It had to be something that would make mouths salivate simply by looking at it, then reinforce that craving with the first bite. That’s when it hit me – braid the bread! And so, without further adieu, I give you Braided Dinner Rolls!

3 cups Warm Water
1/4 cup Butter, melted
2 Tbsp Honeyville Powdered Whole Eggs (or 1 Egg)
1/3 cup Sugar
1 Tbsp Salt
8-9 cups Honeyville Alta Artisan Bread Flour
4 Tbsp SAF Yeast

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

In your BOSCH Universal Mixer, add ingredients in the following order:
Water, butter, powdered whole eggs, sugar, salt, 4 cups Alta Artisan flour, yeast. Turn mixer to #2 setting until ingredients are completely combined, then add remaining flour 1 cup at a time until dough begins to pull away from the sides. Knead on #2 setting for 3-4 minutes after that.

Bread Dough

Remove from BOSCH and place on a lightly oiled surface.

Rolled Out Dough

Using a rolling pin, roll out dough.

Dough Strips

Slice dough into thin, long strips, using a pastry or pizza cutter.

Braided Dough

Taking two strips of dough, begin to braid the dough together.

Braided Roll Dough

Once you have a long, braided strip, take one end and roll the braid up until you get a round, braided roll. Repeat process for each set of strips and place braided rolls on a baking sheet sprinkled with cornmeal. Lightly brush tops with melted butter.

Knock oven down from 400 degrees to 350, then bake for 30 minutes.

Remove and allow to cool on the baking pan.
