Who doesn’t love a luxurious, relaxing bath?  This time of year when the weather outside can be cold is the perfect time to pamper yourself and enjoy a nice long soak.  In our world where everything is so fast paced, this can be a great time to slow down and take care of ourselves.  Just by adding a few things to your bath water you can make great strides in your health and beauty routine.

Milk & Honey

1 cup of milk and 1/2 cup of honey.   This is also known as the Cleopatra Milk Bath.   Cleopatra’s beauty has long been attributed to her milk baths. More than an indulgent experience, bathing in milk has historically been utilized for its healing properties.  Great for moisturizing and sloughing off dead skin cells, the milk and honey mixture is a wonderful, spa-like experience.    Try Honeyville’s Instant Nonfat Dry Milk and Granulated Honey for your bath. 


Fill a knee-high nylon or thin sock without holes with 1/2 to 1 cup of oatmeal (this cannot be quick cooking or instant). Tie tightly at the top. Place it in your warm bath, with you, and squeeze it softly every so often to release the oatmeal “water.” Before leaving the bathtub, scrub your entire body lightly with the sock.  To clean: Over a trash can, turn the sock inside out and scrape all of the oatmeal off the outside, then rinse well with warm water. Baking Soda & Epsom Salts

Epsom salts are full of magnesium and scientist have done studies that prove that your body soaks up the magnesium from Epsom salts when you bathe in it.  Magnesium has a multitude of health benefits.   Magnesium is needed for the metabolism of other minerals, the proper use of insulin, efficient muscle and nerve function, and for restful sleep. Balancing with calcium in the body, magnesium helps to maintain a normal heart beat and blood pressure. It protects artery walls in times of stress, and prevents the calcification of soft tissue. Deficiencies can be linked to common issues, such as insomnia and irritability, even heart disease.

A homemade detoxification bath made from Epsom salts and baking soda is therapeutic and regenerating, but it may not be beneficial for everyone. Pregnant women, and people with heart problems and high blood pressure should be cautious and possibly consult a doctor beforehand. To be safe, talk to a medical professional in the case of any pre-existing illness, or if on any medication.

For any of the above mentioned baths,  let your skin lap up the nutrients for 30 minutes.  Wash the tub very well in order to remove any milk residue.   Repeat once or twice a week.
